Taste of discovery and serenity: these were the main ingredients of the day spent by the guests of the Sicilian Geriatric Institute.
Guided by the facility's educational service, the seniors went on a field trip to the Eco Museo del Mare in Palermo, 'Mare Memoria Viva'. This museum is the only urban eco-museum in the south that recounts the urban and social transformations of Palermo from the post-war period to the present day through testimonies, stories, images and memories linked to the city's sea.
Upon arrival at the museum, guests led a tour, revealing the anecdotes and curiosities of local history. Afterwards, guests ate an ice cream outdoors all together, to crown the day they had just spent.
"Outings in the local area are a special occasion for the elderly," say Chiara Savà and Vincenza De Miceli, heads of the educational service, "They are a diversion from everyday life and a return to sociability. This is something that is often lacking for residents of retirement homes, which is why we are very committed to this front. After the visit, we immediately saw the benefits: the residents were much more active, lively and vital, both mentally and physically".
