An afternoon of festivities, colours and traditions delighted the guests of the Giacinto Blasoni' nursing home in Risanorun by Sereni Orizzonti. Protagonist of the initiative is the group Byzantine costumes of Turriacowhich brought the solidarity volunteering project "VariousEtá 2024"recognised as being of particular importance by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region.
The association's volunteers, led by president Caterina Chittaro, visited the elderly guests wearing the characteristic traditional Byzantine clothing, living testimony of a cultural heritage rooted in the history of the Isonzo area. The group enlivened the afternoon with a repertoire of traditional local songs and dances, actively involving the elderly residents in a moment of intergenerational sharing. Entertainment activities with the group in the facility are held monthly.
Making the meeting even more special was the presence of the dog Gina, the group's mascot, which aroused great enthusiasm among the guests, many of whom were able to relive the pleasure of contact with a pet. "Our aim is to maintain living the link with local traditions and, at the same time, creating moments of joy and sharing with those who, like the elderly in the RSAs, particularly benefit from these encounters," said Caterina Chittaro. "The 'VariEtá' project stems precisely from the realisation that the encounter between different generations enriches all participants".
The Byzantine Traditional Costume Group.
The Group Traditional Byzantine Costumes has been involved since 2000 in the enhancement and promotion of the historical, cultural, craft, artistic and musical heritage of the Bisiacaria and the FVG region, through a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities. Since 2004, it has also been running an ongoing musical entertainment project, VariEtà, aimed at the elderly guests of some twenty facilities in FVG, for which it has received the Good Example Award four times at the National Person and Community Award in Turin.
Project initiator and organiser Pamela Zazzero, who together with director Alessandra Serra expressed their gratitude to the volunteers: "Initiatives like this represent precious moments for our residents. Encounters with local traditions stimulate the memory and create an emotional bridge with their past, contributing significantly to the psychological well-being of the residents," says Pamela.

In the Rsa 'I Tigli' in Gemona, managed by Sereni Orizzonti, a meditation activity with guests started in July, managed and organised by Andrea Favro, Mental Coach CSEN and mindfulness teacher from Veneto, who has been transplanted to Friuli for many years.
Mindfulness is a meditative practice that consists of bringing attention to the present moment, intentionally and through the breath. Practising and training awareness of the here and now helps to calm the mind, reduce stress and consequently improve general well-being. In the elderly, it can promote sleep and optimise emotional management.
Andrea Favro has invested many years in spiritual training, devoting himself to mindfulness, breathwork and anger management. "Having passed the age of 50," he tells us, "these practices helped me to live my days more intensely. I therefore thought it could be even more useful for the elderly."
The weekly meetings take place through a meditation divided into four phases, guided step by step by Favro. It starts with a moment of recollection with eyes closed and continues by following the breath, trying to pay attention only to the actions of inhaling and exhaling. The third phase involves an awareness of the different parts of the body, limb after limb, zone after zone. Finally, in the fourth phase, there is total relaxation and a release of tension in the entire body.
"It may seem difficult for the elderly, but they willingly get involved by trying something innovative that they have never tried before," says educator Cristina Picco, who initiated the project together with Favro.
In addition to the meditative phases, at each meeting a feeling - joy, sadness, shame - and a pillar, i.e. an element of life that is considered fundamental: gratitude, compassion or happiness in small things are discussed through stories and examples from everyday life. "It is very satisfying to see the guests relaxing and enjoying the experience. We discuss life and what really matters. I am grateful that the proposal for this project was accepted, and I sincerely thank the educators and animators of the facility," Favro concludes.
The Rsa "I Tigli" in Gemona can accommodate elderly people with varying degrees of self-sufficiency. It is managed by Sereni Orizzonti, one of the first three groups at national level operating in the construction and management of nursing homes, with about 80 Rsa and more than 5,000 beds in Italy and abroad.
The 'Digitalmentis' project has landed at the RSA 'Villa Tuscolana' in Rome: the residence took part in the experimental pilot programme on digital education of the Lazio Region for the two-year period 2023-24. The digital world is constantly changing and there are many risks that can be encountered, which is why it was necessary to 'alphabetise' the over-65s and fragile social categories free of charge, warning them of possible frauds and scams, on the correct use of social and digital products, the use of smartphones, and online surfing.
"The project of the Assoconfam aps association has our guests very enthusiastic. As a residence, we share the values of this initiative, which sees the knowledge of the world of the Internet and the positive and negative aspects of this tool as fundamental to individual emancipation and social inclusion. I thank director Alessandro Stirpe for giving all our guests the opportunity to learn and stimulate their curiosity through these meetings" - said facility director Francesca Cartisano.
During the meetings, guests were given handouts, teaching materials and finally pedagogical prizes as real experts in the digital world.
Become a child again? It's possible with the initiative of the Rsa "San Giuseppe" in Follina, which allows its guests, several times a month, to taste ice cream from Nicola's van, which arrives at the facility trumpeting and warning them of the sweet gift. The sun and the heat did not stop the guests who, together with relatives and family members, did not miss the opportunity. For those who could not be there outside, ice cream was brought to them in the recreation room, after which they spent an afternoon of fun with lots of music.
"Summer is a time of joy and fun," says director Gianmarco Comazzetto, "It means immersing our guests in experiences outside the usual routine. Mental well-being is just as important as physical well-being. This is the value we give to these beautiful moments together".
