FARM OUTING FOR GUESTS OF THE CUSANO MILANINO RETIREMENT HOME: AN ENCOUNTER WITH NATURE

Just past Biodiversity Day and in anticipation of World Environment Day, the elderly guests of the Retirement Home took advantage of the arrival of fine weather for an immersion in nature.

In order to actively foster the connection between the city and the countryside and to provide a stimulus for interactions, stimuli, visual, tactile and olfactory experiences, the elderly guests of the facility met and stroked the numerous animals present at the "Cascina Pezzoli" farm in Treviglio. Very often the condition of non-self-sufficiency leads many elderly people to social isolation: maintaining a relationship with the outside world is fundamental to reduce the sense of marginalisation. It also positively affects self-esteem, with beneficial effects on physical health as well.

Over the course of a morning, the guests followed a trail around the farm, encountering horses, donkeys, goats and peacocks. The beautiful sunny day made the visit a complete success.

"Elderly people are a real resource," says Federica Cuscona, director of the facility, "and the farm is a healthy environment for outdoor living, a way not to lose cultural traditions. It was also an opportunity to recall activities that many of our guests did in their youth".
