At a critical time for Italian healthcare, Massimo Blasoni, founder of the Sereni Orizzonti group, expressed deep concern about the current crisis of social care workers (OSS) and nurses, condemning the persistent inertia in training.
The latest data confirm a worrying picture: according to the Ministry of Health, in 2022 Italy had a total of 302,841 nurses, of whom 268,013 were employed by the National Health Service and 34,828 by other facilities. With only 5.13 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, our country is well below the European average, also showing significant territorial disparities - from Campania with only 3.83 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, to Liguria with 7.01.

Blasoni: 'Our company is at the forefront of the goals promoted by sustainable development'. Looking to the future: 'Objective 10,000 total beds by 2028'.
The Sereni Orizzonti group, owned by Massimo Blasoni, confirms its position as the second largest group in Italy in the construction and management of residences for the elderly, with 91 facilities and more than 6 thousand beds in Italy and abroad. The group closes 2024 with total revenues of about Euro 240 million, with a development plan for the next five years that envisages the opening of 20 facilities for an investment of about Euro 200 million. The company's development strategy focuses on two key elements: the ecological transition and technological innovation through care domotics.
Ecological transition: a forward-looking choice
For several years now, the Friuli-based group has been investing in the construction of low environmental impact buildings intended to become care residences for the elderly, anticipating what has now become a national priority. "At a time when ecological issues are of fundamental importance, as confirmed by recent developments in legislation," says Massimo Blasoni, "our company is at the forefront of the objectives promoted by sustainable development.
It is not just a question of environmental awareness: investing in green resources has become an economic necessity. The unstoppable increase in energy costs in recent years has made green buildings a strategic resource for the company. "The increase in raw material prices, which would automatically result in higher guest fees," explains Gabriele Meluzzi, the group's managing director, "has instead a negligible impact for companies like ours that have invested in renewable energy.
Sereni Orizzonti's energy class A3 buildings utilise various state-of-the-art systems: photovoltaics on the roof, solar thermal for sanitary use and heating, thermodynamic heat recovery from exhaust air, building insulation and a high-efficiency heat pump. These buildings autonomously produce at least 165,000 kWh of energy, which corresponds to more than 60% of their entire needs. In practice, each residence reduces atmospheric emissions by more than 69 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Assistive Domotics: Quality of Service
"In Italy, many facilities for the elderly are outdated and use old care systems. For the planned new residences, we will invest in the functionality of the systems, thanks to what home automation makes available," emphasises the founder of Sereni Orizzonti. The role of care home automation is to make the lives of frail people easier, safer and more comfortable: this is an essential requirement in residences housing elderly people with varying degrees of self-sufficiency.
New openings planned
"For the first half of 2025, we plan to start up 500 new beds between Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sardinia, Veneto and Sicily," Blasoni concludes. "Ours is therefore a winning and effective strategy, which allows us to continue to be a leading group in the sector, aiming for the goal of 10,000 total beds by 2028.
